Taylor was introduced onto the show's canvas as Caroline Spencer's (Joanna Johnson) psychiatrist. She soon fell in love with Caroline's husband, Ridge Forrester (Ronn Moss), and began dating the designer after Caroline died of leukemia against CarolineĀ“s explicit wishes that Ridge should reunite with Brooke. Taylor, as psychiatrist, advised as her "professional opinion" that Brooke should give Ridge space and then flew in with her broom to snatch Ridge for herself. This angered Taylor's ex-husband, Blake Hayes (Peter Brown), who had a medical condition which caused him to have violent outbursts. After several failed attempts to come between Ridge and Taylor, Blake left town.

Taylor became friendly with her mentor, Dr. James Warwick (Ian Buchanan), and when the two were convinced that they were going to die after being trapped together after an earthquake at Big Bear Lake, virginal James begged Taylor to make love to him as he didn't want to die a virgin. Taylor obliged out of compassion and fondness. Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang) found out the truth, and Taylor was forced to come clean.

A love triangle ensued between Ridge, Taylor and Brooke. By 1998 Ridge had committed himself completely to Taylor, who had given birth to Ridge's first son, Thomas (currently played by Drew Tyler Bell). In 1999, Taylor gave birth to Ridge's offspring again - identical twin girls, Phoebe (currently played by MacKenzie Mauzy) and Steffy (last played by Alex Hoover). In 2000, Steffy was presumed dead in a boating accident, when in fact she had been kidnapped by psychotic Morgan DeWitt (Sarah Buxton). When Taylor discovered the truth, Morgan kidnapped her as well. Ridge eventually rescued them both by crashing his car through Morgan's house.

In 2002, Taylor took troubled Amber Moore (Adrienne Frantz) under her wing. This caused friction in Ridge and Taylor's marriage as Ridge believed Amber was nothing more than gold-digging trailer trash.

On a stormy night in October 2002 Taylor realised that Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown), who had been stalking Amber, was a danger to Ridge's father, Eric (John McCook) and rushed to Eric's mansion to warn him. Startled by Taylor's arrival, Sheila shot her. Taylor hung on long enough to say goodbye to her friends and family, before passing away in Ridge's arms.

However, it was revealed in 2005 that Taylor had not been dead, but in fact comatose. Prince Omar Rashid (Kabir Bedi), Taylor's former husband, had kidnapped her from the hospital after she "died" and switched her body for a fake torso, which was convincing enough to fool Taylor's entire family. Ridge and Taylor shared a passionate reuinion and Ridge soon separated from Brooke, who he believed he was then married to (the marriage was deemed invalid). Ridge and Taylor renewed their wedding vows.

Their marriage was rocky for the next few months, as Taylor was concerned about Ridge's unresolved feelings for Brooke. Eventually Ridge annulled the marriage, leaving Taylor to take comfort with Hector Ramirez (Lorenzo Lamas).

In a tragic accident, Taylor was responsible for hitting and killing Darla Forrester (Schae Harrison) with her automobile. At first, Taylor gave in to Hector and Phoebe, who convinced her she should be silent about her part in the accident. Eventually Stephanie (Susan Flannery) also learned the truth and advised Taylor to remain silent because of her developing relationship with Darla's widower Thorne Forrester (Winsor Harmon). Wracked with guilt, Taylor eventually confessed the truth to Thorne and then to the police. She was arrested for vehicular manslaughter, driving on a suspended license (because of a prior DUI) and obstruction of justice. Thorne testified at Taylor's trial that he believed Darla's death to be an unavoidable accident. The jury found Taylor innocent of the manslaughter charges, and the other charges were dropped.
