Tawa Flat deviation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tawa Flat deviation is a section of the North Island Main Trunk Railway (NIMT) north of Wellington, New Zealand. The deviation includes two long tunnels. These two tunnels were opened to goods trains in 1936 and passenger trains in 1938, replacing a steep portion of the original main line of the former Wellington & Manawatu Railway Company, much of which is still in use as the Johnsonville Branch. The southern tunnel comes out at a bridge in Ngaraunga Gorge and then into the second tunnel, which passes under Newlands and comes out at Glenside, on the way to Tawa. This line is also used by Tranz Metro services to Porirua and Paraparaumu.
