[edit] Are you OK?

Hi Tauʻolunga. Just thought I'd check that you're alright. The news from Nuku'alofa sounds bad. I recognise several of the buildings you've listed at Nuku'alofa from when I visited a few years ago (I visited a friend working there for a year). It must be terrible to see it. Thankyou for updating us. Do you think we should split out a separate article, say 2006 riots in Nuku'alofa? --Scott Davis Talk 09:18, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

I am OK. No, I do not want to that. In fact I would like to suggest a wikipedia policy which forbids articles of events less than one month old (or so, depending on the type of event). In fact I would not have edited Nukuʻalofa, if not some other people had already started it. The reason: this is an encyclopedia not a news paper. An encyclopedia should be a matured reference work. We can have wikinews for current events which change from minute to minute. Only when the initial hype has died out and they have turned history, then it is time for the encyclopedia. Take for example the earthquake of 4 May 2006. Or the death of Tuʻipelehake in July. 90% of their information is not really relevant anymore. --Tauʻolunga 19:47, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
I'm glad you're OK. My friend's friends all appear to be OK too, although some are staying further out of town for a while.
I can understand your reasoning for not wanting to make a new article. My thoughts towards creating a separate article are:
  1. The current strife could overpower and dominate the Nuku'alofa article.
  2. The riots, damage, recovery and rebuilding are going to remain a significant event in Tongan history
  3. A separate article provides a single place to include information about related issues like the causes and lead up (politics) and the international response, including foreign military presence at Fua'amotu International Airport, which is not really appropriate for the Nuku'alofa article.
It's not yet clear to me from reading reports I have seen whether there is significant unrest across the rest of the island or country, except that the airport appears to require additional protection. I think your own eyewitness accounts belong on Wikinews (with a link from Wikipedia like wikinews:Riots in Tonga), but info from citeable news reports can go into Wikipedia immediately they appear to be accurate. --Scott Davis Talk 09:09, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

I rewrote the 2006 Tonga riots article; it was somewhat choppy. Please take a look and tell me if I've introduced any inaccuracies. After looking through all Sione Langi's photos, I couldn't help but think that a lot of the violence was due to young men adopting "gangbanger" attire and attitudes. Noted "Warlords" spraypainted across one looted store. The diaspora comes back to bite Tonga in the butt? Comments? Zora 09:32, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
