[edit] Short Platforms
Short platforms represent a safety hazard if the door opens where there is no platform opposite and a passenger steps out into the void. To reduce this hazard, the doors on the original double-deck interurban trains are only unlocked by the guard, leaving it to the passenger to actually open the doors. On the more recent double-deck trains, the guard can selectively open just those doors that are opposite a platform, the remaining doors staying shut and locked.
