So why do I use various religious symbols on my userpage?	Border Color
I don't mean to be divisive, but rather inclusive, portraying several religions (and their respective statements of equality) side-by-side. jaranda page

Obviously it looks ok on your browser, but have you checked others? This is the screen shot from my computer (safari). The problem, in my view, is that by not having a fixed width for the pin image cell then that cell in the table can be of variable size. As soon as it increase from 80 px the all-brown background is visible and it breaks the edge of the paper at the the top, as you can seen in the screenshot. Did the pin image cell remain a fixed size in your own browser? If so, I assume this is because the the 50% width you specified for the neighbouring cells that caused it too remain small. Clearly this does not work in all browsers. After i made the changes did it look wrong on your browser?

Also, on my screen, the colour definitely does not match. the colour i substituted was the exact match according to photoshop. Did it look wrong in your browser? David D. (Talk) 16:44, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

The original looks perfect in Mozilla Firefox and reasonably perfect in Internet Explorer, the two browsers I looked at when I originally made the page. Since I made the image, I know for a fact that the background color is in fact the same color as the background color for the pin. The best option may just be to redesign a less complex page. I don't want to divert an unnecessary amount of resources away from the main objective of Wikipedia, building an encyclopedia, to dealing with the inconsistencies in web browsers for a user page. -- tariqabjotu (joturner) 16:57, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

It just dawned on me that the differences with respect to colours are due to the limitations of web colors (see figure to the right). Comparing the two shades of brown we were using (D5A96C and CC9956 respectively) neither equate to a standard web colour, although both are similar. The real colour that should be used is #CC9966, and will be universal with respect to different browsers and monitors. i hope you find this useful David D. (Talk) 21:12, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Yes, those changes did mess up the changes in Jaranda's... er... Jorge's browser. Regarding the web colors, I thought that perhaps that may have been the problem, but I perished the idea because the it's 2006 after all; the idea of web-safe colors ought to be outdated. Initially it never crossed my mind it was a safe color issue. Anyway at least we are more aware of the imcompatability issues. i had not realised there were such large differences possible between browsers. David D. (Talk) 03:16, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

So i just tried it with a mozzilla based browser and the only thing my edits mess up were the colours. The fixed 80px for the pin image cell didn't messup the formatt. i will make that formatting edit again, but this time without changing the colour. At least that way safari users will see the pinned pieces of paper the way they should be seen, rather than with the unsightly brown gap at the top (see screen shot above. Before you revert it, could you please get a screen shot? i don't understand why explorer would reject that code. I'm quite sure an administrator will have to take care of the quickbar change. When the portal becomes ready for its premiere, we could post something on the administrators' noticeboard. Also, take a look at some of the suggestions from the portal's talk page. I hadn't confirmed the need for an administrator to do it, but I suspect you're right. With respect to your suggestions at Portal talk:Current events, I think its great that you're anxious to engage in that discussion. If you've been following along on my proposal to move Current events into the portal namespace, you'll notice that I was anxious to minimize any initial layout and look-and-feel changes to Current events because of its maturity. I also thought it would complicate things to combine the change I proposed with a broader change to the layout. Once the dust settles on the move, I look forward to adding my $0.02 about your proposals, and I look forward to any mockups you end up creating to illustrate your ideas. Fair Use Image on Main Page

Image:Knox Johnston Golden Globe.jpg falls under fair use, and so theoretically, it should not be on the Main Page or the dozens of user pages which transclude the Main Page. Perhaps a free image, like Image:Joshua001.jpg...

Care to be identifed as a portal maintainer?

Since you are the founder of Wikipedia:WikiProject Current events, and will be (I have no doubt) a future admin, and as someone with good ideas about improving the layout and organization of the portal, please consider adding yourself as a maintainer of Portal:Current events at Wikipedia:Portal/Directory#History. While I've been a Wikipedian and regular contributor since it has about 100,000 articles, 99% of what I do is done without logging in and therefore outside of the community. All of these reasons as well as your enthusiasm for current events, portals, etc. lead me to hope you'll consider identifying yourself as a maintainer. Kayaker 18:33, 2 July 2006 (UTC).

It doesn't seem to go along well with the other portals in the History section, which relate to (mostly) ancient history. My rationale for its present location is that current events are nothing but very recent history (the phrase "current events" could more accurately called "recent past events" though that kind of precision would actually confuse people since everyone knows what "current events" means as a phrase). It doesn't fit in any of the categories perfectly but short of giving it a category of its own, I think its present location is as good as any. I had to add it to multiple places where that categorization is used so several changes would be needed if you and others became really enthusiastic about such a change. Spelling

I don't know about that. We have a Macau article, not a Macao article. While Macao gets 35.3 million Google hits, Macau gets 116 million Google hits. The CIA World Factbook uses Macau as well. And not to cite a Wikipedia article, but the Macau article indicates...

The form "Macao" was the original Portuguese spelling, and has been retained in most European languages. In modern Portuguese, the correct spelling is "Macau". During the 20th century, the official spelling "Macau" became more and more common in English-language sources, including most print media.

Do you believe that last statement is incorrect? So perhaps my edit summary may not have been 100% correct, but I believe we should stick with Macau for consistency on Wikipedia and due to its overall popularity. -- tariqabjotu (joturner) 17:05, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Instantnood wages edit wars over this spelling difference. It's safe to ignore him on this. Wikipedia has consensus to use the u form for article and category titles. Within articles both forms get used. SchmuckyTheCat 19:12, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm afraid your Google test failed to reflect its usage in English, since it includes webpages in Portuguese (which is an official language in Macao), other European and Roman-letter langauges. There are more occurance of Macao than Macau for English pages within the Canadian domain (181,000 155,000), Canadian government domain (35,300 10,800), OECD (18,100 452), United Nations Development Programme (919 153), for instance. In my E-Mail exchanges with the Macao Government, they've clearly indicated that Macao is the spelling they use in English, except for proper names. — Instantnood 18:16, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Well here is how difficult it is to work with YOUR own comments on my page. The overly large extremely bright pages on Wiki make everyone seem like they are shouting at me. I am so upset about this that I am leaving Wikipedia until it's corrected. See also: Image:Mboverload.jpg.

Cowfight image

Hi there,

I wonder why you uploaded this image under a different name than the one on the commons. Doesn't it make sense to upload it with the same name? That way image links don't go dead once it's off the main page (and gets speedy deleted). - Mgm|^(talk) 08:52, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

I mistakenly believed the image needed to be uploaded under a different name so it could be protected while it was on the Main Page (I wasn't sure whether overriding the Commons image required administrative privileges; I've never attempted it before and didn't want to since the image was on the Main Page). Regardless, it did its job and it most likely didn't cause a problem. The image was always, and still is, available at the image location similar to that on Wikimedia Commons: at Image:Cowfight0a.jpg. About the outlines

Joturner, I really like your Userpage layout, so I decided to put a page outline on mine. However, when I did, it didn't outline the enitre page and has a huge blank spot in the middle of it. Okay, I took your advice, and it worked! Thanks a ton, man. It's like speaking a differernt language (php, rigth?) here! Just one little nag. On the right, there's a infobox stuffed with userboxes. I inserted a quote in there. The only problam is, that I wanted to attach a link to the quoter's name, but the blue color distracts my red color scheme. For some reason, the quote box read {{{1}}} when I took your advice. No problem, though. I just changed my color scheme to blue. :) Hey, do you know if there's like a suggestion box for Wikipedia? I figured out how to make text appear with different fonts, but the selection is very limited. My suggesetion: Make WIkipedia's fonts compatible with [3]. yeah, you actually explained your standards quite well. With clarification, it actually seems fine to me. RfA always makes me worried because of what sometimes appears to be a patchwork of rigid standards held by a variety of editors. I'd agree, I would like to hear his answer to the question. Even if you do choose to oppose on those grounds, I applaud your willingness to reasonably consider the opinions of other editors. A lot of people do "drive by" voting in RfA's, which can be quite frustrating. To be quite frank, I really haven't bumped into many editors in a similar situation to him.
