Tarpe Mills
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tarpe Mills (1915-1988) was the pen name of comic book writer June Mills. Mills is generally considered to be the first major female comic creator.
Born June Mills, she chose the name "Tarpe" in hopes of concealing her gender. As she became more popular, people eventually learned she was a woman. She is best known for creating the superheroine Miss Fury, a character based loosely on herself. During World War II, Mills had her cat, Purry-Purr, become the unofficial mascot for the allied troops. She died in 1988.
