Tarin Kowt

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tarin Kowt is the capital of Oruzgan (also written "Uruzgan") province in southern Afghanistan. It is a small and dusty city of about 7,000 people, with some 200 small shops in the city's bazaar. There are no medium- or large-scale economic enterprises in the city. The provincial governor, currently Maulavi Abdul Hakim Munib, lives and works in a compound adjacent to the bazaar.

Tarin Kowt is isolated, its only airstrip is on the military base of the NATO-ISAF-led Provincial Reconstruction Team. Its only access to the outside is a broken and insecure road to the regional center of Kandahar to the south. As of Summer 2006, NATO and Afghani troops have established Forward Operating Base (FOB) Martello [1] along the Kandahar - Tarin Kowt road. The Dutch have established Kamp Holland.
