Tarare (Salieri)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tarare is an opera by Antonio Salieri, after a play by Beaumarchais. It was first performed in Paris in 1787. Salieri also reworked the material into an Italian version retitled Axur, re d'Ormus with libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, which opened in Vienna in January 1788.
The finale of Axur appears in the 1984 film Amadeus. The film is somewhat misleading in presenting Axur as being performed immediately after Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and before the premiere of Don Giovanni, when in fact Don Giovanni appeared first, in the fall of 1787.
