Tapper Zukie

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tapper Zukie (pronounced Tappa, born David Sinclair, 1955, Kingston, Jamaica) is a highly influential Reggae artist and producer/DJ. Tapper (spelt "tappa") was the nickname given to him by his grandmother in his youth, while Zukie was the name that came from his friends' association as a young boy, their gang called "The Zukies". In 1973 he moved to England of the UK to stay with some relatives by decision of his mother. An older producer friend, not happy with him possibly wasting his musical talent, had Tapper performing an opening show for Jamaican DJ pioneer U-Roy the day after his arrival in London. From then on Tapper Zukie was picked up and recorded his debut single "Jump & Twist".

In 1976, he released his debut solo album "MPLA". This album was integral to the Punk-Reggae crossover happening in London in the late 1970's. Mick Jones of The Clash refers to it in "Westway To The World", and The Sex Pistols reference MPLA in "Anarchy in the UK". Zukie scored a respectable number of hits between 1976 and 1979, with albums like The Man from Bozrah in 1978 and various other albums on LP at the time, such as In Dub in 1976 and Earth Running in 1979.

From the time of his debut success until 1986 he performed over 30 concerts on tour between venues in London and Kingston, Jamaica. From 1986 on, he concentrated on producing music in Jamaica, working with many such reggae musicians such as The Mighty Diamonds, Max Romeo, Ken Boothe, Sugar Minott and U-Roy. His contribution to reggae will never be forgotten. Recently, according to PRWEB, he has signed an agreement with Silver Kamel that allows the legal downloading of his music from reggae-mp3.com.

He has had an equal impact on both sides of the recording deck, as both a hitmaking toaster and as a producer who has worked with the cream of Jamaica's vocalists.
