[edit] Noble families with saints' names
San Vincenzo Ferreri, for example, should either stand on its own, or REDIR to San Vincenzo Ferrer or St. Vincent Ferrer or wherever they put the saint. The noble family, while perfectly legit of course, derives its name from that of the saint.... I hope you're not planning on doing this with San Giovanni and the rest of them.... (Ou peut-être devrions-nous continuer en français? Je ne suis pas tout à fait sûr que vous soyez anglophone, et peut-être on se comprendra mieux en français??) [edit] Maltese Nobility
Oho, merhaba. Don't get mad at me quite right yet.... One item, I put up for deletion, then 2 then 3, then I went and looked at what on earth you're doing; now that I can see it from your contributions list, maybe I can help fix it.
Like any other encyclopedia, Wikipedia is a good place for the history of noble houses, but it is not a genealogical databank (read about it among the reasons for Deletion). The Nobility of Malta is a perfectly valid and welcome subject, but you therefore need to avoid getting all your stubs deleted as genealogy. Put some history of each family on it, their coat-of-arms, etc.
You had a rough start of it, in part because of me; but if you tread a bit more carefully under the Wikipedia guidelines, it'll all be OK in the end. I'll hold off for a coupla days.... Best, Bill 23:12, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks Bill, I only had the Maltese nobility placed a day ago. I shall need at least several weeks to place the related histories including biographies to each one. Its a very big job which will take some time. I shall start with those starting with san or St.
- Thanks and please keep myself informed of any concerns.
- Regards User:Tancarville 802am, 26 Oct 2004 (EST)
-
- OK, you're on. I just found that much of the text on your page Marchesi di San Marciano is the same as text on this page. Now I suspect that that non-Wikipedia page is in fact yours; but if anyone else notices it, your page will get immediately slapped with a "Copyright Violation" tag, and ultimately deleted. To see what that looks like, just add copyvio to the top of an edit, and PREVIEW it -- don't save it!!
- Anyway, what you need to do to prevent this is to put a note on the bottom of each page you take from yourself (or from someone else with their permission), something like this:
[edit] Are you Charles Said Vassallo?
If not, please don't copy his copyrighted material from http://www.geocities.com/maltesenobility. If so, please let us know that you are releasing your data into the GFDL. RickK 05:00, Oct 28, 2004 (UTC)
- I am Charles Said Vassallo. User:Tancarville Main web site is MalteseNobility.org and MaltaGenealogy.com
OK, could you please explicitly say that you release this information to the GFDL? RickK 22:55, Oct 28, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] More problems
Charles, you need to start cleaning up this stuff, or else a lot of people are going to start voting to delete all of it. Look at the Votes for Deletion page, where you're starting to accumulate ill-will, with several articles now listed by different people. I'm sticking up for you for now, because I believe Maltese nobility is a good thing to have on Wikipedia, but if it becomes just a terrible mess, I too may change my mind.... Here's a quick list of recommendations:
- Content:
- Do not insert personal good wishes to people on encyclopedia pages, or extremely laudatory statements: someone will remove them. Read about POV. (I read your kind words about some man who died in the odor of sanctity, and personally I can only approve — but this is an encyclopedia, not a fan site: Wikipedia takes a dim view of it.)
- Do not submit bare lists of people with dates and genealogical information. Wikipedia does not consider itself a genealogical bank, and someone will strike them out, or people will vote to delete the page.
- Do add biographical detail, provided the persons are notable.
- Do add coats of arms, provided of course you have permission.
- Do note the permission you give to Wikipedia to use any material that is yours to allow, as I mentioned earlier.
- Format:
- Do not use excess spaces and returns: they cause unexpected results on Wikipedia. For example, a space at the beginning of a paragraph does this:
space at the beginning etc.
-
- Do not leave things hanging with "...." or in mid-sentence.
- Do add at the bottom of any pages that deal with that field.
Best, Bill 20:54, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Has it improved??
The problem has been that these other people dont give enough time to finish the job. I am a company director that works long hours and this is my hobby that keeps me occupied to the end of the night. I shall get there, so long as these other people consult before making decision. I have made a serious amount of change and hopefully its of satisfaction.
Many Thanks Bill, you have been very generous and kind.
Conte Charles Said-Vassallo 19:47, 29 Oct 2004 (EST)
- Yes, very definitely improved. I will certainly keep on sticking up for you — at least where the articles are not mere genealogical compilations, so do flesh them out.
- One of the problems is that you're writing the articles online bit by bit, and many of the articles are unfinished. It would have been better to finish them first, and spring them on Wikipedia when "complete". (I put "complete" in quotation marks because anyone else, Maltese, informed or not, may come along and rewrite them at any time: that's Wikipedia. In practice, mind you, articles on relatively obscure subjects — no offence in the least, my own little villages in central Italy, e.g. Manciano (PG), are another case in point — are not often substantially changed by others) Still, what's done is done, and it'll all work out fine in the end.
- It's probably better for you not to sign those articles — we're not supposed to —; the only essential thing is to protect them by putting that "by permission" notice at the end, else someone will say "Gosh we have to throw that out, we'll get in trouble!"
- By the way, I forget where it is, but you have detailed material on a painter, complete with a photo of one of his works: it would be good to break that out to his own page, and add a further tag See what I did — not very well, no — with Gerald Strickland and Counts of Catena. Best, Bill 12:48, 29 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Hey, I've just got a couple suggestions for you. And other people have already said them. Don't sign your edits with "permission is given....." or however you do it, and clean up your articles more. For example, the article Barony of Castel Cicciano. The article may have a lot of good information in it, but it is not written in an encyclopaedic fasion. None of the words in it link to other pages, and if someone reads that page by itself, it really doesn't make much information. An article has to be either self-contained, or cross-referenced. [edit] Article Licensing
Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)
[edit] Cleanup of Category:Maltese nobility articles
I have added the cleanup tag to almost all of the articles in this category. This was not intended as disrespect for the information contained in the articles, or for your research. But there are a variety of textual problems:
- Most of the articles need significant work to be made to conform to the Wikipedia Wikipedia:Manual of Style.
- Many of them lack almost all context, failing to mention even that these are related to Malta (unless one notices the category).
- Many of them read as though they are cut-and-paste assemblages from different sources of notes, rather than finished and coherent texts.
- A few of them contain your personal opinions on various subjects, and while this was no doubt normal on your own website (from which they were copied), it is not suitable for Wikipedia articles.
- A few of them have a bit too much genealogical detail for Wikipedia, which is not a genealogical reference work.
By placing them on the Wikipedia:Cleanup list, I am hoping they will receive some attention from people other than me. I plan to work on several of these articles myself, as time allows. I have already done some work on Sant Cassia and Francis Sant-Cassia, which I hope you will review and improve, but not simply revert. Regards, --BM 14:01, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Hi BM, I have attempted to clean them up. I totally agree with your comments, and have made many attempts to streamline them. I am making comments to each of those with cleanup which I ve changed. Shall need a few days to get through them all --Charles SV 14:01, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Copyright thingy
Hi there! You seem like a very extensive contributor, about Malta especially. That's cool! I wanted to point out that there are some issues regarding copyright on your pages. Obviously you wrote them yourself so that's not the issue - however, for material to be included in Wikipedia, it needs to conform to the GFDL (or was it GFDL? anyway). It probably won't be a problem at all, but I have alerted our copyvio team to contact you and discuss it. So you won't get taken entirely by surprise.
Oh and btw, it is not customary to sign Encyclopedia entries with your name, so you may consider moving the 'written by me and used with permission' bit to the relevant Talk pages instead.
Yours, Radiant! 09:32, Feb 25, 2005 (UTC)
- How can I license my self with GFDL User:Tancarville
-
- The easiest way would be for you to license your website under the GFDL. That's done as follows,
- get a copy of the GFDL from Wikipedia, and stick it on your website as something like 'legal_disclaimer.html'
- at the bottom of each page on your website, put some small print stating 'this text is licensed under the GFDL' that links to said disclaimer
- on your user page here at Wikipedia, add a brief paragraph explaining this
- make sure that you wrote all the texts yourself (you probably know that already, and if so sorry I asked). You may of course refer to and cite from books, just not make verbatim copies of large amounts of book text.
- The easiest way would be for you to license your website under the GFDL. That's done as follows,
- Sorry to put you through this legal loop, but copyright issues tend to be rather annoying. Radiant! 10:04, Feb 26, 2005 (UTC)
-
- Hi again. Thanks for clearing that up. However, one more detail... your user page now reads that 'this text' is licensed under the GFDL, which means it refers to the user page itself. It would be better if you said that 'All texts I have submitted to Wikipedia, including those included on my website at maltesenobility.org' are licensed under the GFDL.
- Also regarding your question, can you be paid for adding information to Wikipedia, I'm afraid the answer is no. Wikipedia is free, nobody pays for using it. Hence, there is no money to pay to the contributors.
- Yours, Radiant! 14:36, Feb 26, 2005 (UTC)
- By the way, yes, some of your pages where nominated for deletion - but this was done before the debate about it, and quite some time before I contacted you about the copyright issue. As it stands, they are not going to be deleted anyway, but there was some concern about it earlier. Radiant! 12:09, Feb 28, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] De Sayd
I came across De Sayd by accident, and I am completely baffled by it. I see from comments on this page that there are requests for you to add some context to articles so that casual readers can learn from your work. I would urge you to do that in this case, too! You have put too much work into the pages to have them ignored - but right now, only people who already understand the material can figure out this article! That's too bad. - DavidWBrooks 22:10, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hello. I noticed there have been some other comments about copyright here, but I didn't see any mention of searchmalta.com which contains the text you put at Buttigieg De Piro. Did you originally write the text at that site or do you have permission to release it under the GFDL? Please leave a note at talk:Buttigieg De Piro if you do. Thanks. [edit] Charles Gauci
-
- I have examined the votes on the AfD, and reckoned that 6/3 in favour of deletion is sufficient consensus to delete, bearing in mind that little additional notability was established. Hence I have deleted the article and closed the debate. I would suggest that anyone who wishes to see an article of this name, provide clear evidence and justification of ntability to the votes for undeletion process, which data could then be incorporated into the article. Perhaps wait until he has recieved his Maltese Republic award. For example, are the books he authored published by a notable publishing house? How many copies have sold. Are they cited as standard reference works. Has he published on pain management, and is he cited? What is the nature of the award from the Republic of Malta, and how many people recieve it each year? How many people have a title of similar rank to his? Did he write the "bird book" or is that someone else? etc.
- On the subject of personal abuse in the AfD, what a shame! It did not advance any argument an iota, and resulted in more ill feeling than was probably intended. It is clear to a dispassionate observer where the abuse stemmed from, but one has to be aware that people feel personally attacked when their contributions to the 'pedia are attacked. I speak from experience.

[edit] Personal offence
Dear Tancerville,
I am writing to express my sincere disappointment on you taking it badly for placing articles on the afd. I understnad, you have valid articles, however if there is something more which needs to be done is to follow the rules on Biographies in the wikipedia. I did not mean in anyway to pick on you, its a usual routine to check for afd. In fact you will note i did not only post for deletion your articles / pick on you as you are stating. I believe you have the potential. Do not expect to get paid for the work you do in wikipedia or do some form of "advertisment" by signing the article and links to your books, proof from other sources is required.
Concerning the talk pages, I do sometimes comment on the talk pages, for example in the case of Stephen Sant Fournier, i did but when I saw vandalism on the move, I had no other option but to place it for afd. There is a comment in the talk page of The Association of Foreign Titles in Malta. This was reccommended to me by another user. So I do comment on the talk pages.
With a little bit of attention, no more articles will be placed anymore on the afd. There is always place for improvement.
Rest assured that I'm not picking on you in anyway. I've had articles deleted, everybody does, but you have to bear in mind the fact that some of them will be deleted. I constantly monitor Maltese pages, and if I see something wrong I remove, or improve. For example the Soverign Grand Lodge of Malta, was placed by me for deletion but later on improved, so I deleted the deletion nomination from the afd page.
Hope the above clears the matter once and for all. Maltesedog 20:01, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Stephen Sant Fournier et al.
Hello, looks like you're talking to User:Maltesedog which is a good thing. I have cleaned up Stephen Sant Fournier and will probably vote on the AfD. Because this is a title propagated by primogeniture, I have more sympathy than with some of the others you have mentioned. I have looked at some of your comments elsewhere and see that you are very busy, I suggest you work on a smaller number (ideally one) article and get it into good shape, rather than spread yourself thinly. In theory it shouldn't affect AfD how well or badly an article is written or presented, but in fact it certainly does, especially when these articles are the main source of information people have to go on - as most of the other web sources were written by you as well! We could really do with a few more experts on the subject to help us judge notability of European titles. Rgds, Rich Farmbrough 21:14, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Article tone
- Hi, I've cleaned up some issues on the Marquis Testaferrata-Olivier article that I'd like to bring to your attention. I notice other people have brought up some of the same issues with you, so forgive me if you've heard it before.
- When you add text you have written as an essay, could you make sure to remove references to other essays or change them to Wikipedia links(or external link)? Also, your breezy tone is good for an essay but not really encyclopedic.
- I also need a bibliography for the Royal Commission report you refer to, and perhaps a mention of the year and location of the Commission. I don't know if you mean to refer to a British Royal Commission or an Italian one. Thanks. Kerowyn 00:44, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
- Many thanks Kerowynfor your cleanup of Marquis Testaferrata-Olivier. With regards to the British Royal Commission into the Maltese Nobility, this was held to investigate the validty of the Maltese titles of Nobility which was held between 1877 until 1884. The conclusion was to enable use under the British Empire of 32 titles., there were those not presented or not considered for useage under the British Empire and also those of the Italian faction. That is why there is to this day two organisations as some had considered the Royal Commission illegal.

[edit] License tagging for Image:Image004.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Image004.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Image003.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Image003.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Jtalledo (talk) 20:15, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps the Maltese nobility should be completely deleted as I am completed tired of the deceptions, lies and wasted energy to protect works. If I am still blocked by the end of Monday 14th Eastern Standard time, then I will never return. tancarville 07:53, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
