Tang Ching-sung (Chinese: 唐景崧; pinyin: Táng Jǐngsōng) (1841-1903),was the first President of the Republic of Formosa. He was inaugurated as the President of the Republic of Formosa on May 25, 1895 and then issued a declaration of independence from the Qing dynasty. The declaration was not sincere, as Tang Ching-sung was a Chinese official and the declaration of independence was an attempt to stave off a Japanese invasion.
The Japanese invaded northern Taiwan on May 29, 1895 and President Tang Ching-sung disguised himself as an old woman and fled to mainland China on June 4. He was succeeded by Liu Yung-fu on the next day.
