Tanchon or Tanch'ŏn is a city in northeastern South Hamgyong province, North Korea. It has a population of approximately 360,000. There are extensive mineral resources in the area, including cobalt, magnesite, and iron ore. The chemical industry is also developed.
Tanchon borders the Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea), into which the Namdae River flows. It is situated on the Hamgyong Line railroad, which continues to Chongjin and Hamhung.
The population of Chinese Gorals in Tanchon has been designated North Korean natural monument #293.[1]
