Tampa and Western Railroad

Florida state law chapter 4253, approved May 27, 1893, incorporated the Tampa and Western Railroad Company, owned by E. E. West, J. A. Cranford, H. C. McCrary, G. A. Howell and Gilbert Montague,

  • for the purpose of surveying, constructing, equipping, operating and maintaining a railroad, of standard gauge and material, from some point in or near the city of Tampa, in Hillsborough county, Florida, upon the most practicable route through the following counties, or as many of them as said railroad company may select, to-wit: Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, Marion, Levy, Alachua, LaFayette, Taylor, Madison, Leon, and Jeffseron, to some point on the line between the States of Florida and Georgia, and such branch line or lines from any convenient point of points along the main line of said railroad to any town or city, factory, mill, mine, etc., especially from some convenient and desirable point in the said county of Taylor by the most practicable route to the city of Tallahassee in said State, and from the same point in Taylor county to the town of Madison in Madison county, within this State, which may, in the discretion of a majority of the directors of said company, add to or subserve the interest of said company; Provided, That no branch line shall exceed fifty miles in length.

The railroad was promised land grants along its line.
