Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, established in terms of the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University Act 1996 (an Act passed by the Assembly of Tamil Nadu, is one of the youngest specialized universities of India, offering various courses in Law. Unlike the other National Law Universities/Schools in India, which are unitary type of universities, this university can be classified both as a teaching university as well as an affiliating type University and it has Special Unit for its own teaching and research, the School of Excellence in Law. Hence, its jurisdiction extends to the entire state of Tamilnadu, and all the six law colleges situated in the state of Tamilnadu are affiliated to this university. The University became operational from October of 1997, nearly ten years since the first university fully dedicated to the legal studies has become functional at Bangalore.Though this University seems to have been inspired by the National Law School of India University experiment, it has not followed the model in toto. The University derives its name from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, one of the most prominent Indians of the 20th century. As is the case with the other State Universities in Tamil Nadu, His Excellency Governor of Tamil Nadu is the Chancellor of this University, making a clear departure from the tradition of national law schools to have either the Chief Jusitce of the Supreme Court or the High Courts in the States as their Chancellors.
The colleges currently affiliated to the University are:
- Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai, established in 1861
- Government Law College (established 1974), Madurai
- Government Law College (established 1979), Tiruchirapalli
- Government Law College (established 1979), Coimbatore
- Government Law College (established 1996), Tirunelveli
- Central Law College (established 1984), Salem
The University conducts examination in almost all the branches of Law, and awards degrees and diplomas recognized by the Government of India, and several other countries across the globe.
