Talywain
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Talywain is situated between Garndiffaith, Abersychan and Pentewyn. An old and cultured rural area that has a great and long heritage in education and rural mining. The old British Coal mining (the NCB or British Coal) site was a great source of income and work for many of the local settlors and attracted people from far and wide with the chance of a stable job and living. The mine was very pro active and produced alot of coal and produce for a good half of a century before closing due to being unsafe in May 1974. After the site was no longer used for mining, the 'British close Comprehensive of grammar' was opened in the late 70's. Although a very modern and attractive school it's life was shortlived due to regulations with laws and safety and had to be shut. This allowed near neighbour 'Abersychan Girls school of Grammar' after 50 years of being single sexed to become a Mixed senior school. Talywain offers some incredible views with beautiful surrounding scenery and a very warm small community. It offers several public houses along with a few small shops and a near by viaduct which used to be used as a main train track and transport from pontypool to Blaenafon for many years. Talywain also has its own Rugby and footballs clubs along with a soon to be 18 hole Golf Course and Driving range. Talywain's own football club and team is Fairfield F.C, The team has been running well over 30 years with a long history of cups and achievements at domestic level and within the Gwent County. Talywain Rugby club A.F.C are also a very successful team within their own rights. With a very solid team and very good players in every position the team enjoys a very large amount of success with a few of the players going on to play at semi pro level for teams like Newport and Pontypool respectively.
