Tajwīd (تجويد) is an Arabic word meaning proper pronunciation during recitation, as well as recitation at a moderate speed. It is a set of rules which govern how we read the quran. It is derived from the root Jawwada, meaning to make well, make better, or improve. It is a Fard meaning a must, so every muslim should do their best to read it in tajweed. It started just after the prophet Muhammad (SAW) death when Abu Bakhr ruled. It was started by a famous Grammatition calle Abu Aswad Al-Doualy.

In an Islamic context, tajwīd most often refers to proper recitation of the Qur'an.
