The Taiwan National Baseball Team or the Chinese Taipei National Baseball Team (Traditional Chinese:中華成棒代表隊 Wade-Giles:Chung Hwa Cheng Pang Tai Piau Tui) is the national representative team of Taiwan and is governed by the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association. The team is one the elite baseball teams in Asia along with Japan and South Korea. The team, however, comprises amateurs and professionals from Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League, Japan's Central League and Pacific League, and the Major League Baseball. Nonetheless, it participated in many of the international and regional tournaments and has achieved many successes. The team has won four champions in Asian Baseball Championship in 1983, 1987, 1989 and 2001. It has also won a bronze medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and a silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Its recent success was the winning of the gold medal at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha in a sweeping victory by beating S. Korea, Thailand, China, Philipines, and finally Japan.

[edit] Name controversey

Since the expulsion of the Republic of China from the United Nations, the Taiwan national baseball team was forced to compete internationally under the name of Chinese Taipei because the Chinese dominated regime on Taiwan did not want to use the name "Taiwan" for fear of Taiwanese claim to independence. This created quite a bit of confusion. International media usually refer to the team fittingly as the "Taiwan Team."
