In the Star Wars expanded universe, the T-wing was originally designed to replace the A-wing as an interceptor. Unfortunately for the New Republic, the end result turned out to be a poor replacement for the A-wing.
Like the A-wing, the T-wing is a light first-response fighter approximately 10m in overall length. The ship's speed is just higher than that of a TIE Interceptor and therefore is faster than that of the A-wing.
With shields and hull similar to that of the Z-95 Headhunter, this craft will not last long if it is hit by even a medium-power accurate salvo.
Maneuverability was another disappointment to its designers, as it is less maneuverable than the A-wing. As per the A-wing, weapons are light, only dual laser cannons being fitted in order to maintain maneuverability. However, the T-wing's warhead load is equal to that of an X-wing, making it a good multi-role fighter in the hands of a good pilot.
Like the Y-Wing, Z-95 Headhunter, and R-41 Starchaser, the T-wing quickly became popular with independents, mercenaries, and pirates, and subsequently proliferated across the galaxy. The nomadic pirate leader Ali Tarrak made extensive use of the craft.
The T-Wing made its first appearance in Star Wars: TIE Fighter.
