Tébessa (Arabic: تبسة)(pop. 170000) is a capital city of Tébessa Province, Algeria,20 km east from the border with Tunisia.

Tebessa was an outpost of Carthagein 7th century BC.
In 146 AC it became part of the Roman Empire and was known as Theveste.
In 7th century AC after the Arabs invasion Theveste lost its importance.
Ottomans established there a small military garrison in 16th century.

Tebessa is an agricultural center.Nearby there is a phosphate mine.The city is known with traditional Algerian carpets.

Tebessa is connected by road and rail with the other parts of Algeria,and by road with Tunisia.There is also an airport.
