Despite barbarian invasions, Arles hosted many ecumenical councils, including those of:
- 314, at which the heresy of Donatism was formally condemned
- 353, called in support of Arianism
- 1234, which opposed the Albigensian heresy
- 1263, which condemned the doctrines of Joachim of Fiore, a 12th century monk and mystic.
