[edit] Original Release
Originally released in a 1000 copies only pressing on Endemik records, the pressing consisted of one approximately 30 something minute track. This track was made up of numerous individual songs that mixed together akin to Buck 65's earlier album styles. Apparently the pressing was meant to have additional track markers but it came out on one large track by mistake. The whole recording was composed and completed over one weekend before Buck went on tour, though the lyrics may have been written over a period of time.
[edit] Warner Re-Release
When Buck 65 released Square, his first album on the Warner label, his entire back catalogue of albums back to Weirdo Magnet were also re-released by Warner distribution. Synaesthesia was the only album that contained significant changes to the original release. Most songs were re-recorded, some were dropped, new songs were added and new music was put under some of the original lyrics. Though some songs like The Centaur Drum and Bass remix remained, many of the wholesale changes made to this album altered the original outcome of the Endemik pressing.
[edit] Buck 65's Self Review
This record was made after Square, but released before it which confused some people. It originally was released on a small Halifax-based label called Endemik. The original version was quite different. I honestly feel that the second version improves on the original a great deal. That first version was a rush-job and it shows. It was made in a day and is sloppy.
The original intent for this project was to throw some material together to have to sell on the road. It was never meant to be an earnest effort. I wanted to lighten-up and have a little fun for once.
There's nothing earth-shattering here but it's a good listen. I like this record. "Make-out song" was resurrected from my first ever solo live show. It was meant to be a one-time-only, never-to-be recorded affair, but I brought it back and I'm glad I did. It's ridiculous. It's a song all about being a fan of Kiss. People seem to love it. Go figure...
What I don't like about this record is moral high road that's been taken on songs like "Hens", "Mouth wash", "Toxic Constituents" and the revived and remixed "Centaur". I sound like a blow-hard. This is also a bit of a step backwards. It's probably the closest I've come to making a straight-ahead hip hop record since Game Tight.
"Rat's Ass" is a decent piece of music and the Jo Run produced "Grumpy" is a silly little gem. "Skill saw" is the best intro song I ever managed to put together. It gets the job done in a way all the others before it didn't. And "The Tracks By Pentz Lake" is the best dj cut I ever made. It's beautiful, which is not a common way to describe such a thing.
Synesthesia was never meant to change the world and it didn't. But all in all, it's not bad for a day's work.
