Sylvania is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 18,670 at the 2000 census. Sylvania is a middle-class suburb of Toledo. Sylvania has the title, "Tree city USA".

Sylvania is located at 41°42′41″N, 83°42′12″W (41.711450, -83.703210)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.1 km² (5.8 mi²). 15.0 km² (5.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.68%) is water.

Sylvania is approximately 10 miles WNW of Toledo, Ohio.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 18,670 people, 7,151 households, and 5,070 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,245.0/km² (3,223.2/mi²). There were 7,392 housing units at an average density of 492.9/km² (1,276.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.20% White, 1.00% African American, 0.10% Native American, 2.10% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.63% of the population.

There were 7,151 households out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.8% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.16.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $57,358, and the median income for a family was $73,947. Males had a median income of $52,892 versus $34,583 for females. The per capita income for the city was $28,163. About 3.7% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 3.9% of those age 65 or over.

The mayor of Sylvania is the Hon. Craig Stough. Sylvania has a city council made up of seven members. The president of Sylvania City Council is Barbara Sears. The other remaining members of council are Dr. Read Backus, John Borell, Jr., Keith Haddad, Doug Haynam, Mark Luetke, and Mark Bula.

Public schools in Sylvania are all part of the Sylvania Schools system. The Sylvania Schools system was previously considered the finest in Lucas County. After several defeated levies, it has dropped in quality, but is still counted among the best in the area. The superintendent of schools is Dr. Brad Reiger.
