Talk:Sydney Ling

[edit] Factual accuracy
I'm very suspicious of this. The IMDb confirms Sydney Ling's existence and the Guinness Book of Records bit for youngest director also checks out, but just about everything else appears to be unverified hype. What reliable published sources back up these claims such as "Recognized as the greatest communicator and recognized as one of the greatest minds of this century"? Neither NewsBank nor the Times Digital Archive mention him. All these claims appear to stem from one homeboy website [1] (amazing how someone so successful, charging €5,000 for a consultation, can't afford professional web design). The spamming of Articles for creation [2] under various synonyms looks suspicious too, as well as the removal of a critical assessment [3] from Wikipedia:Articles for creation/2006-04-27. - Dear Tearlach,We were checking some items on Wikipedia and came back to this item. Me and some of my partners have been trying to formulate the different talents of Lord Sydney Ling here,a few times and in a short way. We are not that familiar yet with using Wikipedia technology..reason for trying a few times before. We have known Lord Sydney Ling for quite some time and admire his diversified talents, reason why we thought of Wikipedia. We have been in touch with him after checking that website you reffered to and,he has confirmed us that, this is not his site at all. Some friend somewhere in England and N.Z. started this website years ago and, included different kind of promo on him. Lord Sydney Ling has no website and never had,so far.
- To come back to"Recognized as greatest communicator" These are the words of many people who wrote many 'thank you letters'and not to forget that he started doing his public relation activities at the age of eight.(His hall of letters and pictures include more than one can say) To come back to "Recognized as one of the greatest minds of this century" this we saw and picked out from one of the many Who's Who dictionaries "500 great minds of the early 21st century" "Profiles in Excellence" and "The Barons 500 leaders for the new century" with it's awards and certificates...Although Lord Sydney Ling never mentions these, after all who decides who is a great mind?...With all good wishes, Lenny and Lisa Friedman.May 19.2006.
- Hokay. What you should realise is that Wikipedia is based on a few groundrules. Ones particularly pertinent here are:
- No original research (mere personal knowledge isn't admissible).
- Wikipedia:Verifiability (material must be based on reliable published sources).
- This really doesn't leave much. As I said, in the present article his film career is the only part that's currently verifiable up to Wikipedia standards. Unpublished testimonials are no good. WP:RS warns against using personal websites as sole sources, especially ones that make extraordinary claims like [4]. You also have to be fairly cautious of Who's Who directories: Marquis Who's Who, for instance, has been criticised for vanity aspects and less than rigorous fact-checking.
- So, if these details are true, where can we find independent verification (e.g. newspapers)? Tearlach 23:56, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
- P.S. For starters: "Lord Sydney Ling or His Illustrious Highness The Princely Count and Lord Sydney of the Rosielle and Klipping families" . This appears not to be a recognised title in any modern nobility, but to derive from a purported 1999 reestablishment of the Holy Roman Empire and its nobility (see www.imperialcollegeofprincesandcounts.com). This Sydney Ling dude sounds cool, cause that dude is MMMMMMEEEEEEEEE!!!!!! (except not!)
[edit] searching too
I have been trying to find some sources to help valid this. So far I have come up empty handed. However I have found some interesting things about Sydney Ling that seemed to be overlooked. Such as the film "SHADOWS OF BLOOD" Sydney Ling shot this video with Paul Naschy in Amsterdam in 1988, and it has since become one of the rarest of Naschy films. Well I am not going to give up yet on trying to help valid this, but it is looking grim. - MysticSeaMaiden
- The film background verifies fine. I've revised the article to include only independently verified material. The rest is below. Tearlach 16:22, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
- It's a vanity page, which is more than clear from the requests in Articles for Creation (see "what links here" for this article). The most valid points of notability are directly tied to his work with his grandmother, which is more than adequately covered in her article (Martha Stelloo). Who's Who recognitions, pretenses to nobility, and what little film work he's done simply isn't enough to warrant an encyclopedic page. I'd say merge into Stelloo's page, but as that seems to cover the most notable and verifiable points fine on its own, I'm redirecting to there. The Naschy material can be cited in his article. In any case, any attempts to restore the content without being consistent with Wikipedia:No original research, Wikipedia:Verifiability, or Wikipedia:Notability will be suspect. Girolamo Savonarola 21:24, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- I've reverted the redirect. Going by gut feeling, I'd bin the whole thing - but I did trim it down to the verifiable core, so no need to expunge it entirely. Tearlach 22:59, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- Well, what do you think? Should we maybe test the waters a bit and put in an AfD nom? Girolamo Savonarola 10:31, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
- Not too bothered one way or another, as long as Wikipedia doesn't repeat the unverified hype. Tearlach 21:12, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- Fair enough; my pet peeve isn't so much verifiability as much as vanity. I guess I'll AfD it. Girolamo Savonarola 23:41, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi guys, reading your reports on a wiki article on Sydney Ling,I notice that you only used a few items you found on the web. Also there is no such thing as a official Sydney Ling website, the site you mentioned is out-dated and seems to belong to an Australian company, nothing to do with Sydney Ling.It also seems that the website is unmanaged.Reading further about the holy roman empire titles, yes this is correct information to my knowledge. He is from a mixed european family which is not limited to what I read under the Martha Stelloo article;this is only a part of his family - he is also a cousin of the duke of swabia if well informed problaby Saxe-Altenburg or Heitersheim? The other titles where granted/given to him for his consultancy work and for helping out people. However, this has nothing to do with his past filmwork. His life story is much more interesting than what I read here...Guillermo Bordoy.Barcelona.June 17th.2006.
- Verify it with reliable sources. Also keep in mind that Wikipedia doesn't exist for the purpose of promotion of life stories or nobility claims, nor do these necesssarily qualify for notability standards of the project. Girolamo Savonarola 21:59, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

- he is also a cousin of the duke of swabia if well informed problaby Saxe-Altenburg or Heitersheim?
- Not in any generally accepted sense. There hasn't been a Duke of Swabia since 1268; this is another of these wannabe titles from the Teddington-based organisation asserting to resurrect the hierarchy of the Holy Roman Empire. Tearlach 23:25, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
