Sybok is a character in the fictional Star Trek universe, played by the actor Laurence Luckinbill.
His only appearance is in the film Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, the fifth in the series of films about the continuing adventures of the crew of the USS Enterprise following on from the original series of Star Trek.
[edit] Overview
Sybok is the son of Sarek by a Vulcan princess, and is therefore the half-brother of Mr. Spock. As a young student, Sybok was exceptionally gifted and possessed great intelligence. It was even assumed that one day he would take his place among the great scholars of Vulcan. However, Sybok is a revolutionary, as the knowledge and experience he seeks is forbidden by Vulcan belief. Following the path of the A v'tosh ka'tur, Sybok has rejected the Vulcan ways of pure logic and the suppression of emotions, and has embarked on a quest to find the true physical location of heaven. He is also desperate to have his brother join him, going so far as to hijack the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A and its crew to find the mythical planet of Sha-Ka-Ree. Sybok appears to be killed or absorbed by a malevolent being found there who pretends to be God.
[edit] Note
- Sha-Ka-Ree is a reference to the actor who was originally set to play Sybok: Sean Connery. However, Connery was unavailable because of his commitment with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
