[edit] History

In 1772 British Governor James Grant provided a land grant of 10,000 acres to Francis Philip Fatio, including twelve miles of river front on the St. John River. Fatio, a native of Bern, Switzerland, designated this land as “New Switzerland” and proceeded to establish a thriving plantation. Before being burned during the rebellion of 1812, the plantation was considered to be the premier plantation of East Florida, providing citrus crops, sheep and turpentine. Though the main house was later re-built by the Fatio family in 1822, the plantation never regained the former productivity. The land was split into two 5000 acre parcels in 1832, then further split in later years. The remains of the original plantation have never been found.
