Swiss Miss is a brand name for cocoa powder and pudding products sold by American food giant, ConAgra Foods, Inc.
It began in the 1890s when Anthony R. Sanna was 13. He left his home and headed to New York on a boat all by himself. Although he only had a third-grade education when he arrived in the United States, he became a national authority on dairy activities. Based on his patents, his sons created multiple dairy and dried milk products. During World War II, the government became a huge customer.
One of the first full-flavored dry cocoa mixes came about when they added sugar and cocoa to their dried milk products. Because the product was originally sold only to passengers on airplanes, those fliers quickly began searching for it in grocery stores. This is when the cocoa was first sold in stores.
