Sweet Baby
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sweet Baby (A.K.A. Sweetbabyjesus) was what was most likely the first of the pop-punk bands that originated from Berkeley, California's 924 Gilman Street venue, and certainly the first to be signed to a major record label.
Formed in 1986 by singer Dallas Denery and singer/guitarist Matt Buenrostro with Crispy Jim (later of The Saddlebacks) on bass and Dr. Frank (was/is the frontman of The Mr. T Experience) on drums. Frank and Crispy Jim did not appear on any Sweet Baby recordings, having been already replaced by Sergie Loobkoff (Samiam, Knapsack) and Richie Bucher (Jüke, Wynona Ryders), respectively. Aaron Elliot aka Aaron Cometbus also played drums for them on their 1989 US tour.
They laid the cornerstone for bands like Green Day who were several years younger than Dallas and Matt and originally formed as a Sweet Baby Jesus Tribute Band called "Old Man Moses". They released only two records, but their influence can be heard in much of today's "Punk" music. The failure of their first album, It's A Girl, was due to major labels not knowing how to market US alternative rock acts prior to the breakthrough of Nirvana. It received little promotion and minuscule sales.
In January 2005, their song, "Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby, I Love You" was featured on Bravo in an advertisement for the show Queer Eye for the Straight Girl.
