Swedish Gold Coast

The Swedish Gold Coast was a Swedish colony consisting of settlements of part of the West African Gold Coast (in present Ghana, on the Gulf of Guinea).

Since 22 April 1650 the Swedish Gold Coast was build up, consisting of the following settlements:

  • Fort Carlsborg, modern Cape Castle: April 1650 - January/February 1658, 10 December 1660- 22 April 1663
  • Apollonia, present Benyin: 1655-1657.
  • Fort Chistiansborg/ Fort Frederiksborg, which became the capital, present Osu: 1652-1658
  • Fort Batenstein, present Butri: 1650-1656.
  • Fort Witsen, present Takoradi: 1653-1658.

On 20 April 1663 Fort Carlsborg and the capital Fort Chistiansborg were seized by Denmark, which made it part of its Danish Gold Coast colony.

Each of the three Swedish administrators had a different gubernatorial style:

  • Director, 22 April 1650 - 1656 Hendrik Carlof
  • Governor, 1656 - February 1658 J. Philippus von Krusenstierna
  • Commander, 16 - 20 April 1663 Tonnies Voss
