Swedish Antarctic Expedition
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Swedish Antarctic Expedition (SwedAE) (1901 - 1904) was led by Otto Nordenskiöld with Carl Anton Larsen as the sailing master.
On October 16, 1901, Nordenskiöld sailed from Göteborg, aboard the ship Antarctic, the same whaler that had carried Henryk Bull. The Antarctic dropped off Nordenskiöld at Snow Hill Island and returned to the Falkland Islands to overwinter. She was supposed to return the following summer, but was crushed in the ice in the attempt, and her crew, Larsen among them, were forced to overwinter on Paulet Island. The Antarctic's crew and the Nordenskiöld party finally met at Hope Bay and were rescued by the Argentine ship Uruguay on November 8, 1903.
