Swansea Leisure Centre
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Swansea Leisure Centre is a leisure centre located in the heart of the city of Swansea, south Wales. It hosted a wide range of leisure activities, including a swimming pool with wave generator and hydro-slide, bowling greens and number of mixed-use halls. In its heyday, it was one of the top 10 visitor attractions in the UK, in the same league as Madame Tussaud's[1] as well as being the top visitor attraction in Wales.
The original facility was opened in 23rd June 1977 by the Queen during her Silver Jubilee year. It was a large ugly slab sided concrete building built near the site of the former Victoria railway termninus. The City and County of Swansea council own and operate the venue. The facility was closed in November 2003 with some controversy.
It is however currently being refurbished at an estimated cost of £25 million and will re-open in 2008 and house Europe's first indoor surf boarding ride 'SurfStream'. The leisure centre will also boast an indoor water park consisting of a network of pools, water rides, and slides, including the Masterblaster, the world's first uphill water slide. Plus a lazy river will allow children to body surf, and there will be an interactive pool with play equipment, a toddler teaching facility in the Lagoon Pool and baby classes in the Kids Pool.
