Swadhyay comes from the sanskrit word ("Swadhyay","Swadhyaya","Svadhyay" or "Svadhyaya") meaning study of one's own self for spiritual quest. In recent times it has become associated with the swadhyay Parivar though the belief is central to Jainism and prevalent among Jain practices.

[edit] Swadhyaya in Jainism

Swadhyay is conducted in the Jain community to foster discussion and debate among Jains [1]. Swadhyaya is one of twelve kinds of penance in Jainism [2].
