[edit] History

The channel started broadcasting in 1956 and was called Radiotjänst TV, renamed Sveriges Radio TV in 1957. Most people just called it TV, since it was the only channel available then (except for those living near another country). In 1969, TV2, was launched and the existing channel became TV1. Both channels became a part of Sveriges Television (SVT) in the late '70s.

When SVT reorganised their channels in 1987, the channel would only broadcast Stockholm-made programmes. In 1996, the channels were reorganised again and renamed SVT1 and SVT2. Another reorganisation in 2001 with the ambition of making SVT1 the most popular television channel in Sweden.

[edit] Programming

On weekdays, SVT1 broadcast the breakfast programme Gomorron Sverige in the morning before handing over to Utbildningradion av 9:30. SVT1 starts broadcasting again on 12:00 p.m. and then usually takes a break in the afternoon. Around 3-4 p.m. the broadcasting commence again a then continues until a few hours past midnight when SVT1 and SVT24 broadcast together. Between 6-7 p.m. a special programming stand called Bolibompa with children's programmes is broadcast. The news programme Rapport, shown at 7:30, is the most watched in Sweden [citation needed].

Unlike SVT2, SVT1 is an entirely national channel.
