Suzzana Owíyo

Suzzanna Owiyo is a Kenyan musician. A singer-songwriter, Owiyo has been called "the Tracy Chapman of Africa".
Owiyo was born in Kasaye, in the Nyakach Division of Nyando District, Nyanza Province, near the city of Kisumu. Her grandfather played the nyatiti. In high school, she was a singer and actress. After high school, she performed with various Kenyan musicians, until beginning her career as a solo artist in 2001. She has performed at various festivals around the world.
She released her self-titled debut album in Kenya in 2002. It was re-released for international markets in 2004 renamed to Mama Africa [1]. Her seocond album, Yamo Kudho, was released in Kenya in 2004. Among other tracks, it contained cover of the famous Malaika song, but sung in Dholuo.
In 2006 she travelled to the United States to visit the University of Florida to help start an Arts in Medicine program at Mater Hospital in Nairobi.[2]
