The Suzuki XL-7 is Suzuki's mid-size SUV, launched in 2001 in North America. In Japan, it's nameplate is Grand Escudo. In India, the XL-7 is called the Maruti Grand Vitara (not to be confused with the current North American Grand Vitara, which has since been redesigned). The Maruti Grand Vitara is based on the previous generation platform.
[edit] First generation
The first-generation XL-7 was a Suzuki design, and the vehicle was essensially a stretched Grand Vitara with company's 2.7 L V6 engine on a rear wheel drive-based platform with optional four wheel drive. The sales of this SUV were slow in the United States, but has been a sales success in Canada.[citation needed]
[edit] Second generation
The 2007 XL7, which debuted on April 13, 2006 at the New York Auto Show, shifts to the larger front wheel drive-based Theta platform, and will be built alongside the Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent at CAMI Automotive in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. It becomes Suzuki's first crossover SUV. It features a Suzuki-built version of the GM High Feature engine, a DOHC 3.6 L V6 which produces 252 hp (185 kW) and 243 ft·lbf (329 N·m) as well as a five-speed automatic transmission.
