[edit] Description of route

The line branches off the Illawarra line immediately south of Sutherland station. The line is single track between Sutherland and Gymea station, with the intermediate station on this track (Kirrawee) having a single platform. The line is then double track from Gymea, through Miranda station to Caringbah station, all of which have island platforms. After Caringbah, the line becomes single track again through Woolooware station to its terminus at Cronulla station. Cronulla station has a long platform capable of holding 2 eight car trains, and several sidings. There are currently plans to duplicate the entire line.

[edit] History

A single track steam tramway was constructed between Sutherland and the beachside locality of Cronulla in 1911. The tramway closed, however, due to financial mismanagement and the Great Depression, in 1931. As the tramway was constructed on an alignment that facilitated a conversion to heavy rail, the right of way was taken over by New South Wales Railways. The line was re-laid for heavy rail, electrified and a junction provided with the Illawarra Line at Sutherland in order to connect the hitherto isolated transport facility to the New South Wales railway network. The new Cronulla Branch line opened on 16 December 1939.

[edit] Rail Clearways Project

Under the Rail Clearways project, the single-track sections of the Cronulla branch line will be duplicated, with this project currently expected to be completed by 2008. Woolooware and Kirrawee will gain an extra platform from this project while Cronulla will gain extra track. This project is expected to allow peak hour services on the branch line to increase.
