[edit] Fictional character biography

Surtur was native to the extradimensional plane of Asgard and was the mortal enemy of both Odin and Thor . The comic version of Surtur was depicted as an immense and malevolent being whose power is of apocalyptic proportions (he is the equivalent of Surtr in Norse mythology). Interestingly, both Surtur and the ice demon Ymir, are older and therefore more powerful immortals than Odin and Thor, who were always hard pressed to defeat them. [1]

The Asgardians' greatest battle against Surtur occurred during the creative run of Walt Simonson. Surtur began by forging Twilight, and then sent his legions to Earth, which drew Asgard's armies away from the city. Surtur then crossed Bifrost, the Rainbow Bridge, and thinking Asgard unattended intended to destroy the city once and for all. Odin, Thor and his adopted brother Loki, however, made a last stand and eventually defeated Surtur - at the cost of Odin, who fell with his foe into a dimensional rift. Neither were seen again for almost 50 issues. Surtur finally died during the final Ragnarok when Thor broke the cycle once and for all.

Beta Ray Bill briefly visits the ruins of Asgard after the final Ragnarok, and sees Surtur's massive form falling from the sky. Surtur is still clutching Twilight, although the sword is broken during Bill's battle with the demon Asteroth. [2]

[edit] Powers and abilities

Surtur possessed strength and durability surpassing that of Thor; the ability to generate intense heat, flames or concussive force; molecular manipulation; levitation and inter-dimensional travel. Surtur also possessed a monstrous sword called Twilight, capable of creating rifts in entire dimensions.
