[edit] History
The current Surrey Eagles are the product of numerous town and name changes since 1976. The team started out in Bellingham, Washington, replacing the original Blazers team that moved off to Maple Ridge, British Columbia and eventually folded as the Revelstoke Rangers in 1985.
The first 4 seasons in the league were very disappointing for the Eagles as they did not make it past the Quarter-Finals. It was seasons 5 and 6 that the Eagles really learned how to fly.
In 1997, their 5th season, with a record of 47-7-6 for 100 pts, the Eagles went all the way to the Royal Bank Cup. They got there by destroying Chilliwack Chiefs, 4 games to 0, Nanaimo Clippers, 4 games to 1 and Vernon Vipers, 4 games to 1, to win the BCHL title, Subway Cup. For the British Columbia Championship, they took on the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League champions, the Cranbrook Colts, and won 3 games to 0 for the Mowat Cup. The Fort McMurray Oil Barons were the next opponents to be demolished, 4 games to 1. That series win earned the Eagles the Doyle Cup, and as Pacific Region Champions received entry into the Royal Bank Cup Tournament . South Surrey lost only one game, of four, in round-robin play at that Tournament. They defeated Rayside-Balfour Sabrecats, 5-2, Weyburn Red Wings, 5-4(OT) for the Abbott Cup, Summerside Western Capitals, 3-2(OT) but lost to Kanata Valley Lasers, 7-6. Surrey made-up for that one loss when they got revenge on Kanata in the semi-finals by winning, 4-2. The tables turned on the Eagles in the final, when Summerside Western Capitals defeated them , 4-3, to claim the coveted Royal Bank Cup.
You know that saying, that goes something like, "Well there is always next year", in Surreys case that saying came true. Season 6, 1998, would bring the ultimate goal, a Royal Bank Cup, to the South Surrey Eagles. Surrey absolutely and completely dominated every opponent they met, in the playoffs of that year. On their way to the league title, Subway Cup, they defeated Nanaimo Clippers, 4 games 0, Chilliwack Chiefs, 4 games to 1 and the Penticton Panthers, 4 games to 1. The Mowat Cup saw them defeat the Cranbrook Clots, again, 3 games to 0. In the RBC Tournament round-robin the went undefeated, Weyburn Red Wings, 6-2 Abbott Cup, Milton Merchants, 3-0, Nanaimo Clippers (Host), 4-0, and Brockville Braves, 9-2. In the Semi-Final Surrey defeated Milton Merchants, 6-2 and in the Final prevailed over Weyburn Red Wings 4-1, to claim the elusive Royal Bank Cup.
The remaining seasons were also very strong regular seasons for Surrey. In 1999 they lost the league title to eventual Royal Bank Cup winners Vernon Vipers. They lost twice in the Semi-finalls in that span and won the league title, Fred Page Cup, in 2005 overcoming Vernon Vipers ,4 games to 1. In the Doyle Cup series, Camrose Kodiacs defeated them , 4 games to 1.
