Surly Brewing Company is a new brewery in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Surly Brewing Company was Minnesota's first new brewery west of the Mississippi since 1987. The company is a microbrewery, and currently has their beers on tap throughout Minnesota.
The brewery was founded in 2005 by Surly owner Omar Ansari with the help of Todd Haug, former head brewer at Rock Bottom in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Omar had been brewing his own beers since 1994 with a homebrewing kit that he got for a Christmas present. Omar's homebrews amazed his friends and by 2002 he had set up his own "mini-brewery" in his garage. As of September 1st, 2006 Surly has beers in over 60 bars in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas. Starting on October 24th, 2006, Surly began distributing their beer in cans. Furious and Bender are available in 4-pack, 16 oz cans in a number of Twin Cities' liquor stores.
