This article describes the Surge Radio from Lancaster, CA. The article describing Surge Radio from Southampton, UK is Surge 1287am.

Surge Radio is an internet radio station broadcasting from Lancaster, CA directed toward the local Antelope Valley community. It is owned and operated by 16 high school and college students from Lancaster High School (Lancaster, California), Quartz Hill High School, Paraclete High School and Antelope Valley College, but are in no way associated with the schools. They broadcast from a studio in a residential home near Avenue K and 40th Street West and host their servers at the studio through an Antelecom Wireless Broadband connection with a large bandwidth upgrade. Their website SurgeRadio.org is well known for its games and videos page, including "Mini Jackass" which is an online series produced by Surge Radio's own DJ Zombie featuring ridiculous stunts. They also have 2 additional radio channels Brutal Surge (Death Metal) and Extreme Surge (Metalcore). The radio station is completely non-profit and barely makes enough revenue to cover monthly operation costs.

Surge Radio has an underground music format leaning toward punk, metal and electronica including tracks of any format from Antelope Valley's local bands, and they also pay some attention to Dance Hits, Modern Rock, and Classic Rock tracks. Surge also airs daily news, cultural, and music programming produced locally, nationally and internationally. Politically, many of the shows can be characterized as progressive, leftist, and anarchist.

Surge is also known to play Christian music and talk programming, such as The Lutheran Hour, Growing In Grace, and Full Armor of God. They are the only American radio station to play Russian-language dance music shows "Garage" and "EuroMix" which are produced for Europa Plus, and also heard on Radio 1.

[edit] History

The station began in December 2000 as the "TDP1 Simplex Repeater", which was a FRS or Family Radio Service simplex repeater system on Channel 8 with a connection to the telephone network. It later became known as the "DPI5 Simplex Repeater", when it began playing music on weekday afternoons.

In June 2001, the people behind the DPI5 Simplex Repeater flipped it into a full time radio station "FRS Radio Station DPI5" with a small but unique playlist. It also rebroadcasted some programming from Europa Plus radio 106.2 FM in Moscow and 1220 KIISAM in Santa Clarita. They also became the basis for several other FRS radio stations across the country.

In 2002, it began simulcasting Europa Plus radio 106.2 FM in Moscow full time to the Antelope Valley on FRS Channels 8 and 3 under the name "Europa Plus Antelope Valley". Later, they began simulcasting Digitally Imported Trance during the night time, and several local DJs emerged on the channels including: DJ Whammy, DJ Trigger, DJ CheatX, DJ Vannelly, and DJ Zombie. The station had a relatively weak signal outside Avenue K/Avenue L - 30th/40th Street West but depending on the radio could be heard up to 12 miles away.

In 2003, they added simulcasts on Channel 10 in Rancho Vista and Channel 14 in East Lancaster as well as an online broadcast. They became the official radio station for the "Elite Warfare Knights", which was a counterstrike clan on gamesnet (now GameSurge). Later in May 2003, the Antelope Valley Amateur Radio Club started an investigation of the FRS radio station, and after tracking the signal to its source from the residential home, the plug was pulled on the station. Europa Plus Antelope Valley later reappeared on 106.7 FM at 1 Watt in September but 6 days later, an SWR problem cause their transmitter to fry. A week after, they reappeared again as an online radio station as "Europa Plus Online".

In 2004, Europa Plus Online was issued a cease and desist order by the program director of Europa Plus Ukraine, because Europa Plus Online was unable to generate enough revenue to pay the royalty fees for use of the Europa Plus name and programming. The station's staff joined forces with Zed Radio from Ukaine.

In 2005, Zed Radio split apart into Surge Radio and Radio Galaktika. The name "Surge Radio" was officially adopted on April 22, 2005 as suggested by DJ Ang. Later, Surge Radio popped up on the FM airwaves on 88.5 FM as a pirate radio station but later moved over to 96.3 to provide a cleaner signal with less interference, and eventually added another signal on 102.1 to provide better coverage in neighborhoods to the south.

In 2006, Surge Radio came off the FM airwaves after 7 months and continued operating as an internet radio station. Surge became the main method of music promotion of Antelope Valley's local unsigned bands as well as other bands from around the world. Surge Radio's original staff eventually completely left the station with the exclusion of Whammy (GM & PD), Pronto (Assistant PD) and Zombie (DJ). With Whammy moving to Lancaster High, he managed to recruit an entirely new on air staff.
