Victorian Capitol of Nebraska, Superior is the birthplace of Evelene Brodstone, born 1875, died 1941. The Lady Vestey Victorian Festival is held every Memorial Day weekend in her honor—the Nebraska farmgirl who became British nobility. Evelene Brodstone went on to become the highest paid woman of her time, earning $250,000.00 per year, working as a secretary/stenographer for Lord William Vestey of England. Eventually they married, living a life of extensive travel, and luxury at a mansion in England. Changing her name to Evelyn, Lady Vestey contributed large sums of money to Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior, which was named after her mother, and various other organizations that benefited the town. She never forgot the little town where she was born, and assisted in keeping it alive. More information about Lady Vestey may be found at http://www.victorianfestival.info/ and http://superiorne.com/evelynbrodstone-ladyvestey.htm.
The entire downtown area of Superior is listed on the Historical Directory, including a Victorian fine dining restaurant named Evelyn's, which serves superb cuisine at reasonable prices, as well as authentic Victorian Teas of all natures. They maintain a tea and tea accessory store. The featured tea of Evelyn's is called "Lady Vestey's Legacy" and is a traditional English black tea with raspberry bits and rose petals—truly Victorian. In 2006, Evelyn's hosted the traditional Vestey Tea, in honor of Lady Evelyn Vestey. One hundred and eighty-eight people (some dressed in Victorian clothing) were served fine custom blended tea in vintage English china teapots and cups and saucers. The "house-made" savories and sweets were a traditional English fare served on a three-tiered server—scones with lemon curd and Devonshire cream, various tea sandwiches, a waldorf chicken salad tart, blueberry tea bread, raspberry strusel and double-dipped chocolate strawberries among other things. It is an elegant experience representative of visiting the late 1800s and appreciating the Victorian era. There are gift shops in downtown Superior, particularly offering Victorian items. Tours of Victorian houses may be arranged through the Chamber of Commerce and there is also a museum of Superior history. Home to Meyer Vineyards, a vineyard and wine making facility, Superior is a great destination point for a quaint, relaxed day of exploring the Victorian era.
Though a small town, Superior does have an airport for small aircraft to fly in for a quiet, relaxed visit, Victorian bed and breakfast inns, and a Victorian-style motel, as well as the fine cuisine served at Evelyn's Victorian Dining .
