Superbit

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Superbit is a brand of premium DVD-Video versions of motion pictures from Columbia TriStar Home Video, a division of Sony. Superbit DVDs contain a reduced amount (and usually are completely devoid) of so-called added value and bonus material, such as documentaries or interviews, which can be found on regular DVDs. As a further step to increase bitrate on the main feature, a static menu is used. However, they are encoded at a bit rate that is, according to Sony, approximately twice as high as that of standard DVDs. This allows for an improvement in picture quality, especially on high end home cinema systems, while allowing viewers to choose between Dolby Digital (5.1) and DTS audio. Superbit discs can be read by regular DVD video players.

Sony's Superbit Collection has a limited number of titles, many of which are re-releases of previous best-sellers. Most Superbit DVDs cost $20-$25, the same as an average 2-disc special edition.

Superbit should not be confused with either HD DVD or Blu-ray, both of which are different media formats.
