Commercial production began in 1978 in Japan, for use in feminine napkins.

The largest use of superabsorbent polymers is in personal hygiene products, such as diapers. They are also used for artificial snow for motion picture and stage production.

[edit] Manufacture

Superabsorbent polymers are made from acrylic acid and a crosslinker using the technique of suspension polymerization. The swelling capacity is controlled by the type and quantity of crosslinker control . The most common superabsorbent polymer is sodium salts of poly(acrylicacid).
