Super Kool 223 was a New York City graffiti-writer from the Bronx who made a permanent mark on the graffiti movement because of his innovations. He popularized (and perhaps invented) the so-called 'piece' or 'masterpiece' in 1972 - this due to the discovery of large spray nozzles (Fat Caps) which enabled him to make large and thick letters with spray paint. The adding of outlines to these letters gave birth to the piece.

Around 1971 some writers started to outline their tags and this can be seen as an early predecessor of piecing. But the difference between such outlined tags and pieces in those days was that a piece had to be started with an outline first. Super Kool gets credited for being the first to do pieces on subway trains. He was also the first to do a 'top to bottom' and to put clouds around his tags.
