The Sunshine Plaza was built sometime in the late 1980’s (as The Sands shopping centre) and was mainly a medium sized shopping mall. In 1994, work began on a major expansion of the centre increasing the amount of shops to over 200. Early in 2000, the back car park of the Plaza was divided and turned into another small complex of shops named Plaza Parade, it is anchored by Woolworths Supermarkets, Banjos Bakehouse and Terry White Chemists.
The walkway behind the plaza was transformed into a grassy area with tables for picnics. Later the river front of the Sunshine Plaza was expanded and featured new restaurants and coffee shops this bought the amount of shops to over 225. Birch Carroll and Coyle Cinemas located at the river front of Sunshine Plaza was renovated and expanded. There are plans to futher expand the shopping mall. The Sunshine Plaza remains the biggest shopping centre on the Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Plaza is owned and operated by Lend Lease.
