Sunrise Valley Elementary School (SVES) is an elementary school located in the eastern portion of the planned community of Reston, Virginia. It serves students in kindergarten through the sixth grade. It is a part of the Fairfax County Public Schools system.
Students from SVES typically go on to attend Langston Hughes Middle School and South Lakes High School.
The main building of the school features triangular classrooms with no interior doors. The classrooms are organized into three "pods" which surround the triangular school library. A roofed, paved walkway connects the main building to the Annex which is a large trailer or manufactured building containing a number of square classrooms. Several smaller individual trailers are also present on the lot. A removable partition separates the music room from the cafeteria, so that the cafeteria can be used as an auditorium with the stage being the music room along with a series of large steps in front of the room.
The W & OD trail and other, smaller paths make the school accessible by foot or bicycle from several surrounding neighborhoods.
SVES has a number of annual traditions. These include Field Day in June, which is a day of outdoor games and acitivities for all students. Each fall the sixth-graders travel to Hemlock Overlook Regional Park for a day of various physical and team-building activities including a zip-line which is typically a favorite. Sixth-graders also take a trip to the Gettysburg Battlefield in Pennsylvania in the spring.
[edit] Gifted & Talented Center
In addition to serving its own geographic area, SVES serves as a magnet school for intellectually "gifted" students in Reston. Some students in the GT center come from areas otherwise served by several other local elementary schools. The GT center is comprised of one class each in grades 3-6, so GT students may spend up to four years with the same classmates.
