SunniPath

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SunniPath is an online center for Islamic knowledge from a "traditional" Sunni understanding. This understanding emphasizes that "the distinctive mark of Islamic scholarship has been its unbroken transmission of knowledge" back to the Prophet Muhammad, who is considered the source of all religious knowledge--as conveyer of the Qur'an (direct revelation) and as one whose example is considered "inspired revelation."

SunniPath provides online Islamic learning through its Academy. and runs a respected religious answers and guidance service, through its SunniPath Answers service.

The site's approach has been criticized by some, who feel that this methodology is rigid, conservative, and unresponsive to changing circumstances and situations. However, supporters would say that there is a difference between principled responses, and merely "going with the flow."

Concern has also been raised about the sectarian tone of the very name of the site--putting it in apposition to Shia Islam. However, there is not much on the site to bear out such claims of sectarianism.

The question of religious authority for the answers given is also important. It is not immediately clear or obvious whether the "scholars" at SunniPath have in fact the qualifications and recognized authority to give religious guidance. The implications of this, given the rise of extremist tendencies through populist religious channels not unlike SunniPath, are important in our times.
