Sunbeam Television

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sunbeam Television Corporation is a broadcasting company based in Miami, Florida, owned by Edmund N. ("Ed") Ansin. While the company only has three stations in its family, these stations are often the top-rated stations in the markets they serve.

Sunbeam Television was founded in 1962, when they acquired WCKT-TV in Miami (now WSVN) from the Cox and Knight publishing families, whose company, Biscayne Television Corporation, lost its license. Sunbeam was acquired by Ansin in 1983.

WSVN was Sunbeam's only property until 1993, when they acquired a Boston, Massachusetts television station, WHDH-TV, from New England Television.

On September 14, 2006, it was announced that Boston's CW affiliate, WLVI-TV, would be sold by the Tribune Company to Sunbeam for 117.3 million dollars. The sale was approved in late November of 2006.

[edit] Trivia

  • Despite FOX requiring their affiliates to be branded with "FOX" in their name, WSVN defies this mandate by continuing to brand themselves as WSVN 7. The word "FOX" doesn't even appear in their logo. However, on WSVN's website there is a FOX logo along with the Circle 7. On the other side of the coin, WHDH, which is not required to use the network name in their branding, is branded as 7 NBC, with the peacock appearing in their logo, though the station rarely uses this branding, and 7 News and 7 are primarily used for branding.
  • Both WSVN and WHDH share the same Circle 7 design developed by Sunbeam for WCKT in the mid-1970s, which carried over to WSVN after Ansin's acquisition of Sunbeam. When Sunbeam bought WHDH, they replaced WHDH's pre-existing Circle 7 with the WSVN design.
  • Although the sale of WLVI is now official, the station's website is still operated by Tribune. It is expected, in the near future, that a new website for the station will be created.
