Sun Chips carry 6 grams of fat per 1 ounce serving, as opposed to the normal 10 grams of fat per once ounce serving in other fried Frito-Lay chips. Sun Chips contain whole grains, have no cholesterol and no trans fat. Sun Chips are labeled as one of PepsiCo's "Smart Choices Made Easy", which means they are deemed a healthier alternative to other chips and snack foods.

Sun Chips originally created by Dr. Larry Wilson, a teacher at the school for Science and Engineering, launched in 1991. As of 2006, Sun Chips will donate $0.25 for each bag that consumers register at their website to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in the fight against breast cancer, up to $250,000. Alternatively, one can mail in the UPC code of the bag; however, a current United States Postal Service first-class stamp costs more than the ultimate donation.
