[edit] What Is SBAN?

SBAN, the Summerbridge Breakthrough Alumni Network is a community for fellow graduates and former staff of Summerbridge and Breakthrough “students teaching students” model programs.

SBAN envisions generations of community-conscious leaders from diverse backgrounds whose commitment to education, social justice, and youth development achieves equity for all. To accomplish this vision, SBAN promotes the lifelong learning, leadership and success of its members through the exchange of knowledge, opportunities, and resources. The mutual exchange of support among alumni is the centerpiece of SBAN.

Our success depends on the number of people in the network and the strength of our relationships to each other. We want to connect with over 20,000 student and teacher alumni from 39 sites who served with spirit over the last 29 years. More importantly, the Network nurtures a culture of reciprocity among the alumni, where it becomes commonplace for all of us to share our time, skills, and experience with others who are part of Summerbridge and Breakthrough. Summerbridge and Breakthrough have an intensely loyal following. We all have witnessed the power of the model. It changes the lives of everyone it touches. The Network believes “Once in Summerbridge or Breakthrough, always in Summerbridge or Breakthrough.” As a result, SBAN looks to reunite alumni from across the country and from countries around the world in pursuit of Leaders Developing Leaders.

[edit] How Did SBAN Begin?

The Summerbridge Breakthrough Alumni Network (SBAN) started, appropriately enough, as a connection between alumni.

It was late evening on October 2, 2003, after the inspiring 25th anniversary celebration of San Francisco Summerbridge. As usual, impassioned conversations took place between alumni, but instead of coming from a 12 year-old student and a 19 year old teacher, they were coming from adults in their 20’s and 30’s who had amassed incredible academic credentials, expertise, and the will to make a difference.

Although alumni have participated in Summerbridge or Breakthrough at different sites and in different years, there is a remarkably similar view of what Summerbridge Spirit means: high standards of academic excellence; a belief that young people can lead and succeed; and a celebration of our diverse backgrounds.

From this conversation, a number of alumni rallied to bring SBAN to life. Today, SBAN is a learning organization of over 2700 former teachers, students and program leaders.
