Summer school is a program, generally sponsored by a school or a school district, that teaches students during the summer vacation. In elementary and middle school, these programs are usually non-academic, though some are used for remedial instruction. However, in high school, students can enroll in classes for credit to be taken into account in their grade point average. Some might have to go to summer school because they have failed the previous year. Others take summer school to obtain credit for classes to graduate early or in order to lessen the load of courses during the regular school year.

In academia the term can also refer to a type of conference. Typically established academics with give presentations to postgraduate students.

'The Scottish Universities' International Summer School (SUISS)' Scotland, UK

The Scottish Universities' International Summer School (SUISS) is a truly unique institution. Founded by Professor David Daiches in 1947, the School runs courses in British literature, history and culture, for undergraduates, postgraduates and teachers from all over the world. Last year we welcomed students from 29 different countries. This summer, we present a course of study of twentieth-century literature, which seeks to understand British, Scottish and Irish culture against the background of the enormous social and political change of the twentieth century, as well as a Creative Writing course, run in co-operation with Edinburgh's International Book Festival.

SUISS is based at the University of Edinburgh, itself over four hundred years old. The School also pools the resources of a number of Britain's most prestigious and ancient Universities: Glasgow University, for example, was founded in 1451, and Aberdeen in 1495.

The School offers three and six week courses in literature and creative writing. The social and cultural programme allows students to spend time exploring the beauty of Scotland as well as enjoying events at the Edinburgh Festival.

[edit] Summer School in Geneva, Switzerland

In 2007, the Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEI) will be offering its first HEI Summer Program on WTO Studies.

This will consist of 4 self-contained courses, commencing with a one-week introduction to the world trading system, followed by one week on trade and agriculture, followed by one week on trade in services, and concluded with one week on contingency protection (i.e. subsidies, countervailing measures, antidumping and safeguards).

Situated next door to the front gates of the World Trade Organization, on the shores of Lake Geneva, the course will provide practitioners, government officials, students and academics alike with a solid academic grounding in the law, economics and policy of international trade. In addition, students will also have the option of completing an exam in order to receive an academic certificate.
